North Jersey schools announce early dismissals for Friday, Sept. 8 due to heat

As the heat wave continues in North Jersey, some school districts have opted to maintain shorter days for the first week of school.

The National Weather Service has extended a heat advisory until 6 p.m. on Friday for much of the area, including Passaic, Hudson, Bergen, Essex and Union counties. The NWS reports the heat index Thursday was 100-104 and will be 95-100 on Friday

There is no uniform start to school in New Jersey. Some districts began on Tuesday, while others didn't start until later in the week. Also, some North Jersey districts open the school year with single-session, abbreviated days as part of the academic calendar.
