North Kansas City Hospital facing lawsuits over data breach

A 2023 data breach at North Kansas City Hospital that lasted more than a month now has led to lawsuits seeking class action status.

The breach lasted from about March 27, 2023, to May 2, 2023, affecting the personal identifying information (PII) and personal health information (PHI) for 502,438 people.

The compromised information included names, birthdates, gender, phone number, addresses, health insurance, clinical information and other information.

The lawsuit claims Social Security numbers and medical information also were compromised, but the hospital disputed that in a news release it distributed after the breach.

The breach didn’t start within the hospital’s data system but instead through an outside vendor the hospital used for transcription services, Perry Johnson & Associates Inc.

But the lawsuit says NKC Hospital was informed of the breach in July 2023 and didn’t notify patients until Jan. 3, 2024, an amount of time outside a 60-day window its privacy policy promises to patients.
