North Laurel's Reed Sheppard, Rowan County's Haven Ford earn Mr. and Miss Basketball honors

A pair of stars from the eastern part of Kentucky picked up the state’s top high school basketball honors Sunday night.

North Laurel High School’s Reed Sheppard and Rowan County’s Haven Ford were named Kentucky’s Mr. and Miss Basketball winners during a ceremony in Lexington.

Only seniors are eligible for the awards.

Sheppard, a 6-foot-2 guard who has signed with the University of Kentucky, averaged 22.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 4.0 steals. He helped North Laurel go 25-11 and reach the Sweet 16 before falling to George Rogers Clark in the first round.

Sheppard shot 39.3% (103 of 262) from 3-point range and 89% (113 of 127) from the free-throw line and finished with 3,727 career points after joining the North Laurel varsity team as a seventh-grader. ESPN ranks Sheppard as the No. 21 prospect in the nation in the Class of 2023.

Ford, a 5-6 guard who has signed with Murray State, averaged 26.1 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 5.2 steals. She helped Rowan County go 24-8, falling to Ashland Blazer in the first round of the 16th Region Tournament.

Ford joined the Rowan County varsity team as a seventh-grader and finished with 3,325 career points and 1,458 career rebounds. She was a first-team Courier Journal All-State selection as a sophomore and junior.
