Goodin shines for Collins as Titans advance to face Woodford County for 8th Region title

Kenyon Goodin couldn’t be stopped Monday night, and now his Collins Titans will play Woodford County on Tuesday for the Eighth Region title.

The senior guard scored 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting to lead the Titans to a 57-47 victory over Simon Kenton in a regional semifinal at Henry County.

Considering what was at stake, Goodin said he couldn’t remember a better game.

“I’ve had a couple of nights, not that efficient,” said Goodin, who added that doing it in Henry County’s “phenomenal facility” made it even more special.

Coach Chris Gaither called it an “outrageous” performance.

“Big-time players step up in big moments,” Gaither said.

An 11-1 run over a 5:37 stretch of the second quarter allowed Collins (26-7) to take a 27-14 lead late in the first half and never look back. Goodin scored seven points during that span.

Goodin, who will play football next year at Army, wasn’t the only hot hand for the Titans. They shot 61.1% Monday, while the Pioneers (22-11) shot just 55.6% and committed 13 turnovers.

Gabe Dynes, a 7-3 Youngstown State signee, led Simon Kenton with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

After beating the Pioneers for a third time this season, the Titans will face Woodford County in the final. The Yellow Jackets won Monday’s first semifinal, knocking off North Oldham 61-41.

It’ll also be the third time they’ve faced the Yellow Jackets, who won the previous two games – including the 30th District championship Feb. 24, 52-49.

Gaither and Goodin expect an athletic affair on both ends of the court Tuesday.

“They’re just a team. They can go off in transition,” Gaither said of Woodford County. “If you don’t get back and you mess around, they can go off the transition.”

North Oldham's win streak, season ends

North Oldham saw its 14-game winning streak — and its season — end Monday as the No. 3 Mustangs could not overcome a nightmarish start against Woodford County in an Eighth Region semifinal at Henry County.

Johnson scored 22 points to lead the Yellow Jackets to the 61-41 victory. Woodford County (19-12) advances to Tuesday’s regional final, where it will face Collins.

The Mustangs (25-6) dug themselves too deep of a hole, falling behind 19-2 after the first 13 minutes to the team they beat for the regional title last year.

North Oldham coach David Levitch credited the Yellow Jackets for taking the Mustangs out of their game early.

“To be honest, we just came out like a deer in headlights,” Levitch said. “We looked like a tired team almost. I don’t know what it was. It just really wasn’t our night, and on these nights, if it’s not your night, you’re in trouble. Because it’s win or go home at this point.”

Johnson said the plan was to pressure Dallas Roberts, the Mustangs' leading scorer. While they weren’t necessarily looking for a deliberate pace, the Yellow Jackets stayed patient to find their shots.

That led to a 13-0 run over seven minutes of the first half, allowing the Yellow Jackets to build the 17-point advantage.

“We prepared all week for it,” said Johnson, a 6-2 sophomore who leads a Yellow Jackets team with just two seniors. “We executed well, so I was very excited that we got up early.”

Santonio Waide added 17 points for Woodford County, which also got 11 from Makhi Smith.

Roberts scored 17 for the Mustangs, which never got within 10 points of the Yellow Jackets in the second half.
