North Plainfield man charged with sexually assaulting girl, 9

A 39-year-old North Plainfield man has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl.

Fabian Osuna-Vargas was arrested Oct. 21 in Salt Lake City, Utah after arriving on a flight from Chicago, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office. Osuna-Vargas waived extradition and was taken by Somerset County Prosecutor’s detectives Nov. 4 to the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing, the prosecutor’s office said.

The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit on Oct. 19 was notified by the North Plainfield Police Department of a 9-year-old girl who reported she was sexually assaulted by an adult, according to Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald. The girl told police she was sexually assaulted allegedly by Osuna-Vargas earlier that day in North Plainfield, McDonald said.

Osuna-Vargas was subsequently charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor.

McDonald thanked the members of the Salt Lake City Police Department and the Chicago Police Department for their assistance.
