Lifetime Achievement Award Joseph W. Halko

The North Schuylkill Football Hall of Fame presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Joseph W. Halko for his 35 years of dedication as a trainer to the athletes of the North Schuylkill School District.

From 1984-2019, Halko volunteered his expertise on the sideline of every football game, never missing a single game, both home and away. He treated injuries during and after games while rehabbing, if necessary, for days or weeks. He was involved with pre-game preparations including taping, padding casts, making splints and injury prevention. He also dealt with head injuries and injury prevention screenings.

Halko was an expert with ankles, knees, thighs and fingers. This treatment and care quickly extended beyond the football field to athletes in other sports. Hundreds of athletes from neighboring schools were rehabbed in Halko and Phil Malloy's Pottsville office — PTS — Pottsville Area Physical Therapy Services.

"Mr. Halko," as he was called, treated countless athletes not only on the field and in the locker room, but also in his own home during evening hours. That included Saturdays and Sundays. Many athletes reached out to Halko and were rehabbed beyond their years at North Schuylkill. Former players (and their parents) will be quick to attest to Joe's "healing powers." In fact, four out of the five athletes being inducted this evening received the "Halko healing touch."

In 1999, Halko was instrumental in establishing the first full-time athletic trainer position at North Schuylkill. He has since been inducted into the North Schuylkill Football Hall of Fame as an honorary inductee.

Halko recently retired from his Pottsville office but continues to assist his brother Bill's Pine Grove therapy service, West Schuylkill Physical Therapy. He is also continuing to provide therapy to former Spartan standout Jaden Leiby.
