North Shore communities paying close attention to flooding threat
Coastal communities along the North Shore will be watching the incoming nor’easter closely over the next 24-48 hours as it transitions from rain to snow.
Cities and towns along the water’s edge are paying close attention to the strong wind gusts and storm surges that are expected.
Revere’s Public Works Department has extra crews working overtime and others on standby just in case.
The lingering rough surf coinciding with Tuesday morning’s high tide is a point of concern.
“High tide is supposed to be around 10 feet. With the tidal surge, it can push upwards of 13-14 feet. It’s an issue,” said Chris Ciaramella, Revere’s Construction Manager.
Ciaramella told Boston 25 News that the floodgates on Winthrop Parkway will be closed if the water reaches 14 feet over the seawall.
“These gates would stop any water from flowing down Winthrop Parkway to lower-lying areas of Revere,” said Ciaramella. “Hopefully, it doesn’t turn out to be that bad of an event.”
The city of Revere also has two pumps set up near the water’s edge that can pump any water back out to the ocean if necessary.
