North Shore community named among 15 of America’s best small towns and cities

A destination community on the North Shore of Massachusetts has been recognized in a big way.

CNN recently published a list highlighting 15 of America’s “best small towns and cities,” and a bustling seaport on Cape Ann made the cut.

Gloucester was the lone New England city to land among CNN’s top diminutive destinations.

The Essex County city is famed as the base for National Geographic’s “Wicked Tuna,” the setting for many films including “The Perfect Storm,” and the iconic greasy pole at St. Peter’s festival, among many other things.

“Every visit to Gloucester should include fresh-off-the-boat seafood, a stop to explore the Rocky Neck art colony, and a promenade along the Western Harbor all the way out to Stage Fort Park,” CNN wrote. “Between whale watching and schooner tours, there are plenty of ways to get out on the water.”

CNN recommended that visitors stay at the Beauport Hotel and the Harborview Inn when in the city.

Boston 25 will be visiting Gloucester for a Zip Trip on Friday, Aug. 4.

Other destinations that made the list are as follows:

  • Saranac Lake, New York

  • New Bern, North Carolina

  • Beaufort, South Carolina

  • Metropolis, Illinois

  • Mackinac Island Village, Michigan

  • Eureka Springs, Arkansas

  • Marfa, Texas

  • Taos, New Mexico

  • Whitefish, Montana

  • Moab, Utah

  • Friday Harbor, Washington

  • Julian, California
