Featured Obituary:
Marilyn Carol Goede, 88, of Chicago, Illinois passed away on May 30th, 2020. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, her family could not be by her side.
Marilyn is survived by her children, Lori Goede (Dan Whitmore), Terri (Patrick) Nacey, Carolyn (John) Weiss. Her beloved grandchildren, Hannah, Olivia, and Connor Weiss, and Ryan Nacey, And brother, Donald Krieger. She was preceded in death by her brothers Carl (Doris) and Bruce (Angie) Krieger, and sister, Betty Spoon.
Marilyn was born to the late Marie and Carl Krieger on August 3rd, 1931 in Oak Park, Illinois. After the loss of her mother in 1943 she then moved to Chicago to reside with her Aunt and Uncle, the late Kay and Harry Brewster. From that point forward, she fully embraced everything about Chicago. She attended Lakeview H.S., and on many summer days you might find her swimming off the rocks in Lake Michigan, and hanging out at Riverview Amusement Park, or Lincoln Park Zoo. Later in life, she would often go to the zoo alone just to visit the animals and enjoy the peace and tranquility there. After graduating in 1948, she went on to live in a home for professional working women on the Lakefront, even traveling with her coworkers on the Atchinson, Topeka, and the Santa Fe Rail line. Marilyn was married to the late Frank Goede in 1954. They had three children, Lori, Terri, and Carolyn who they adored, and four grandchildren, Hannah, Olivia, Connor, and Ryan.
She was a true-blue Chicagoan and managed to pass on her love for the Lake and her city to her children. We are fairly certain she was one of the Cubs greatest fans. In 1945, Marilyn and her sister Betty waited outside Wrigley Field for hours and were able to attend the Cubs World Series game. They did not win that year, but thankfully she was alive to see her Cubbies win the World Series in 2016. According to her, however, the best way to enjoy the Cubs was to listen to them on a transistor radio, which she kept by her side at all times during Cubs season.
She loved music. Enlisting all of us at a very young age for piano lessons. She attended every single Taste of Chicago with Lori up until a few years ago when it became difficult for her to get around. And if you happened to stop by while she was cleaning the house you were greeted with the blaring sounds of Neil Diamond’s “Hot August Night”. An excellent cook, we enjoyed many amazing dinners but the best, by far, was her Thanksgiving stuffing and gravy, (which was accidentally left on the roof of Lori’s car one year on the trip from her house) It was located, still intact, still delicious, she was none the wiser. Later in life she found her calling in floral design and spent the next 15 years as a floral designer for the Dominicks food chain until she retired. She loved her plants. Even after she retired managed to have a window garden full of plants in her Chicago apartment.
Her greatest joy, however, came from spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to babysit. She never showed up without little treats and gifts for them, and never missed a birthday or special event. As sick as she was, she was disappointed that she would not be able to see them this Easter and give them their baskets. We were blessed that she was able to see her beloved grandchildren one last time on Mother’s Day, even though she could only wave through a window.
Our deepest sadness comes from knowing our Mother had to fight her battle with Covid-19 alone, without her family by her side. Our greatest hope is that she knew we were with her in spirit. We will hold her in our hearts forever.
