North Star Coffee on the move in Canandaigua

CANANDAIGUA -- North Star Café, a division of The Arc Ontario, will be hosting a grand opening at its new location Saturday, during the annual Fall Into Canandaigua festival in downtown Canandaigua.

North Star, which had been located up north on Route 332 and is now operating at 92 S. Main St., originally opened June 19, 2017. The café sports a newly expanded menu, which includes smoothies and acai bowls, and still has the great customer service and favorite blends from Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters.

North Star provides employment opportunities for people of all abilities and it has quite the sentiment worth toasting: By supporting North Star Café, you’re helping people with disabilities build connections one cup at a time. You’re helping create a world that welcomes people of all abilities with open arms, and your purchase helps provide even more opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities or other challenges to become one with their communities.

All that, and there’s coffee!!!!!

Where did the summer in Canandaigua go?

It seems like only yesterday when the Winter Farmers Market in Canandaigua was in the rear-view mirror and the summer market was straight ahead. Now, it's vice versa, as Saturday marks the final summer market for the 2022 season.

The market seems to have had another successful year, according to Don Cotter, who is market president and, as co-owner of CDGA Coffee Co., a vendor.

The market saw a nice blend of long-time vendors who form the backbone of the market and who customers come to expect and new vendors, like the popcorn and pickle folks, Cotter said.

“It was a pleasure to see people walking around maskless, smiling and laughing along with their friends and neighbors,” Cotter said. “The farmers market has always been a great place to mix and mingle along with being a great place to support local farmers and food producers. It was nice to see things return to some version of ‘normal’ after the two covid years.”

The final market of the season takes place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, under the Mill Street pavilion.

And looking ahead, the winter market opens Nov. 5 at the Antis Street lot.

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery marks 60

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery is celebrating its 60th anniversary with releases of a mini-documentary and special wines to mark the occasion.

The opening lines to the newly released mini-documentary “Celebrating 60 Years of Excellence” set the stage to tell the intriguing story of Dr. Frank’s successes, challenges, and determination of a family humbly beginning a new life in America when he came here from Ukraine at the age of 52.

In correlation with the release of the film, the winery released five special wines – Ethos 2021, Ramato Pinot Gris 2021, Cellar Reserve Riesling 2016, Cellar Reserve Riesling 2017, and Cellar Reserve Pinot Noir 2016. All five of these new releases are available now and can only be tasted and purchased at the winery.

To cap off the 60th anniversary celebrations, this year was full of great accolades for the Finger Lakes winery. In the USA Today 10 Best Awards, it ranked No. 1 for Best Winery Tour and No. 3 for Best Wine Tasting Room in America. Its 2017 Blanc de Blanc won Best Sparkling Wine in New York in the 2022 New York Wine Classic.

And the winery raised over $41,000 early this spring to support World Central Kitchen with its efforts in Ukraine.

"Celebrating 60 Years of Excellence" can be viewed on the winery’s YouTube page or on the frontpage of www.drfrankwines.com. Visit the winery at 749 Middle Road, Hammondsport.
