When will the North Texas heat wave finally end this summer? Weather service weighs in

The dog days of summer — known as the hottest and most humid days of July and August — may have two weeks left, but that doesn’t guarantee the last of the triple digit days in North Texas.

A heat wave that has covered the southern part of the United States this summer extended across the country on Thursday activating heat alerts for millions.

The extreme heat felt in the United States is also impacting countries around the globe. The hottest day on record was recorded this month by the World Meteorological Organization.

In Texas, hot and dry conditions in the Fort Worth area created an elevated fire danger Thursday which is expected to extend into next week.

When will triple digit days end in Dallas-Fort Worth?

Estimating when the Dallas-Fort Worth area may see its last triple digit day is practically impossible, said Monique Sellers, National Weather Service meteorologist.

Even comparing current weather patterns with previous years does not guarantee the same temperature trends will happen this year.

The average last triple digit day for the area is late August, according to National Weather Service data.

In 2022 the Dallas-Fort Worth area saw its last triple digit day in mid-August.

However, Weather Service data shows triple digit days ending as late as early October. The most recent latest last triple day occurrence happened Sept. 20, 2021.

“We can have 100 degree days as late as going into September and October or we can end it in July,” Sellers said. “It kind of just depends on what the actual weather patterns that we’re dealing with are.”
