North Texas recorded its hottest day of the year so far, but cooler weather ahead

It’s official: Friday, Aug. 25 is the hottest day of the year so far in North Texas.

DFW International Airport hit a record high of 110 degrees a little after 6 p.m. Friday, according to the Star-Telegram’s news partner WFAA. That’s the first time the airport recorded a temperature of 110 since Aug. 2, 2011 — and it’s the fourth-hottest temperature ever recorded at the airport.

The hottest temperature ever recorded in North Texas was 113 degrees in June 1980.

More heat this weekend in North Texas

The heat’s not letting up just yet. All of North Texas is under an excessive heat warning through at least Saturday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Highs for the next two days are forecasted at 105 to 107, with oppressive heat indexes as high as 110 through the weekend. Another DFW Airport temperature record could be broken on Saturday if it gets hotter than 106 degrees.

ERCOT is also asking Texans to conserve energy for the second day in a row as it braces for potential “emergency operations.”

But ... a cold front might happen next week

Afternoon storm chances are minimal this weekend — just a 20% chance on Saturday in the afternoon and then 40% on Sunday. But after weeks of some of the hottest weather North Texas has seen in years, the area will get a reprieve Sunday night going into Monday morning.

That’s when we’ll see a weak cold front move into the area, bringing a 30%-50% chance of rain. Highs for the next week should be in the 90s, according to the NWS.

As of Friday, DFW Airport has recorded 45 days with temperatures higher than 100 degrees this year, the eighth-most on record.
