Fifty-four-year-old Karl Carter, a northbound semi driver from Matteson, Illinois, died in a fiery crash just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 65 about halfway between the Indiana 28/Frankfort and Indiana 47/Thorntown exits, according to the Indiana State Police.

Olner Michel, 43, of Simpsonville, South Carolina, lost control of his southbound rig, and it veered off the road, drove through the median and into the northbound lanes. Once in oncoming traffic, the southbound rig struck Carter's northbound semi, according to Indiana State Police.

The collision caused a fire that engulfed both rigs, police said.

An Indiana State Trooper arriving on the scene pulled Michel from the flames and provided medical aid until paramedics arrived, according to Indiana State Police.

Michel was taken to an Indianapolis hospital. His condition is not know, police said.

Carter died at the scene, police said.

Michel's southbound semi drove into the median, it snapped one of the steel barrier cables. That cable struck a car driven by a man from Indianapolis, according to police. He was not injured, police said.

Clinton County Coroner Ed Cripe said an autopsy was scheduled for Thursday afternoon. The identity of the northbound driver, his cause and manner of death likely will be released after that procedure, he said.

The accident closed northbound lanes for hours while the crash was investigated.
