Northbound Sunshine Skyway temporarily closed after armored truck catches on fire

All northbound lanes of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge were temporarily closed Thursday night after an armored truck caught fire near the top of the structure, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The fire was reported just before 6 p.m. Troopers say it appears to be the result of a mechanical failure in the Brinks security vehicle. Fire crews were able to put out the blaze.

There were two people inside of the truck when it caught fire, according to Spectrum Bay News 9, but troopers say no injuries have been reported.

As of 8 p.m., northbound lanes of the Skyway were reopened to traffic. The right lane remained closed on a portion of the bridge as emergency crews worked at the site of the fire.

Interstate traffic was backed up from the Sunshine Skyway to just north of the I-275 northbound toll booth in Manatee County, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
