Northeast Florida high school Athlete of the Week poll: March 27

Baldwin's Shaylen Byrd is the Florida Times-Union's 30th Northeast Florida Athlete of the Week for the 2022-23 high school sports season, covering the week of March 13-18.

The junior pitcher threw a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts against reigning Florida High School Athletic Association softball champion Middleburg, and also pitched a one-hitter against Bartram Trail.

She placed first in a vote of top performers that included Nichelle Brown (Bradford flag football), Emani George (Sandalwood girls track), Mary Kate Jarvis (Episcopal girls tennis), Daylin John-Hill (Bolles boys lacrosse), John Keester IV (Fleming Island boys track) and Carson McFarlin (Creekside baseball).

This week's vote

It's time to vote for Florida Times-Union's Athlete of the Week for the week of March 20-25, 2023.

The Times-Union gathers nominees from scores, stats and nominations e-mailed to the sports desk during the week by coaches across Northeast Florida. Coaches can e-mail these stats and scores to preps@jacksonville.com.

This week's voting begins Monday morning and closes at 10 a.m. Thursday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour.

Here are the nominees for March 20-25:

Akhil Chedde, Stanton boys tennis

The junior led the Blue Devils at No. 1 singles and doubles in 7-0 victories against Gateway Conference opponents Mandarin and Atlantic Coast.

Jorden Clarke, Oakleaf baseball

The junior pitched six innings with one run allowed in a 3-2 victory against St. Johns Country Day, and batted .500 with a double and six RBI during the week's wins against St. Johns, St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra.

Adri Ferrara, Bartram Trail girls lacrosse

The senior helped lead a second-half surge (five goals, two assists, five draw controls) to defeat Ponte Vedra 19-11 in Saturday's Rivalry on the River, and also contributed to the Bears' win over St. Stephen's & St. Agnes of Virginia.

Sasha Gregory, Nease girls track

The senior leaped 19 feet, 1/2 inch to win the long jump at the FSU Relays, and matched her season-best height of 5 feet, 3 3/4 inches for first place in the high jump.

Ella Hutchins, Keystone Heights flag football

The junior rushed for a total of 193 yards and five touchdowns, in addition to two sacks on defense, to help Keystone stay unbeaten with two victories over Interlachen.

Stella Hyatt, St. Johns Country Day girls tennis

The senior led the Spartans to wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in victories over Christ's Church and Ridgeview, improving their season record to 8-1.

Chloe Johnson, Baker County softball

The freshman batted .500 for the week with two doubles, a home run and three runs batted in, including the game-winning home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to overcome formerly-unbeaten Baldwin 8-6.

Nathan Lebowitz, Ponte Vedra boys track

In a 24-hour span, the senior won Friday's Tocoi Creek Toro Showcase discus with a throw of 172 feet, 7 3/4 inches, then won the FSU Relays in Tallahassee with a distance of 170 feet, 7 inches.

Spencer Surface, Bolles boys lacrosse

The senior scored four goals in the Bulldogs' come-from-behind win over Lucy Beckham at the Rivalry on the River, in addition to seven goals against Dublin Jerome and a goal and three assists against Bartram Trail.
