Northeast Florida high school track and field state qualifiers: Class 2A

The 2022 Florida High School Athletic Association track and field championships began Wednesday at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track on the campus on the University of Florida.

The FHSAA is spreading track competition across four days: Class 1A teams on Wednesday, Class 2A on Thursday, Class 3A on Friday and Class 4A on Saturday. Hundreds of athletes from across Jacksonville and Northeast Florida are scheduled to participate.

Last spring, Bolles won the 2021 girls team championship held at the University of North Florida, and multiple Northeast Florida athletes captured individual titles.

Outlook: Bolles should pick up plenty of points in the distance races. Aidan Ryan is seeded first in a 3,200 that could include a quartet of Bulldog scorers, and Daniel deMonte and Colin Duhnoski are seeded 1-2 in the 800. Add assorted points from elsewhere, from relays to field events, and Bolles should score well. Field events look promising for multiple area schools: Keystone's Caleb Moncrief excels in the discus, Bishop Kenny's all-around athlete Noah Straley is among the long jump leaders and shot putter Dylan Freet might become the first state scorer in Tocoi Creek track history. In the sprints, Jackson senior Traunard Folson has some of the best straight-line speed in Florida.

Outlook: Is state championship No. 5 coming to Bolles? The reigning champions should score in multiple events, and they've got several outright favorites: Jillian Candelino in the 1,600 and 3,200, Emily Rohan in the javelin and Presley Wolfe in the pole vault. They should also fare well in the 4x800 relay, and could pick up additional points in the discus, the triple jump or in the sprints with Janay Moorer. Bishop Kenny's Ka'Myya Haywood could challenge for the top of the podium in both of her events, the 400 and 800, and Baldwin eighth-grader Kennedi Proctor is rising fast in the 800. Over in the field events, Palatka's Torryence Poole looks like a strong pick to retain her championship in the shot put.
