GREEN BAY - On July 1, someone other than H. Jeffrey Rafn will be the person leading Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College for the first time in 25 years.

Rafn, NWTC president since 1997, has announced he will retire effective July 1.  The school operates a main campus on Green Bay's west side, satellite campuses in Marinette and Sturgeon Bay and "regional learning centers" in smaller communities.

NWTC's Board of Trustees has begun discussing the search for Rafn's successor. They will target "a strong candidate who can carry on the legacy Dr. Rafn has established," Cathy Dworak, who chairs NWTC’s Board of Trustees, said Thursday morning in a statement issued by the college.

In retirement, Rafn will work on housing issues, disaster relief and education.

At NWTC, Rafn has led efforts to keep the college in a leadership role as an innovator, adapting to the changing needs of the community and its employers, the college said in a statement.

Dworak called Rafn "an inspirational leader" who maintained focus on student success that contributes to the continuing economic vitality of northeastern Wisconsin.

Before arriving at NWTC, Rafn earned a doctoral degree from Boston University and spent 18 years as an educator on the East Coast.

NWTC said it plans regular updates on the presidential search going forward.

The college has served nearly 1 million students during his tenure.
