Northeastern Illinois University briefly placed on lockdown Thursday night after shots fired

Police are investigating after shots were fired near Northeastern Illinois University Thursday night, which resulted in three suspects being taken into custody and a brief lockdown of the campus.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 5100 block of North Central Park Street, near the university’s entrance on Foster Avenue, just before 9 p.m. and found a dark-colored SUV involved in a car accident. In a search of the surrounding area, officers found three men matching the description of the fleeing suspects and took them into custody, police said.

The university was briefly placed on lockdown during the incident. No injuries were reported by police.

Police did not say how the SUV crashed. Several firearms were collected from the scene, and charges are pending.
