Northeastern student who was struck while boarding a school bus has died: police

A Northeastern School District student who was struck by a vehicle while attempting to board a school bus last month has died, according to Newberry Township Police Chief Steven Lutz.

Arianna Landis, an 11th grade student, died on Thursday, according to police and the school district.

"Arianna was a much loved Bobcat and a dear friend to many. She will be deeply missed," the district said in a statement.

The crash happened just after 7 a.m. Oct. 26 in the 500 block of York Haven Road in Newberry Township. It was still dark outside at the time.

She was seriously injured and taken to York Hospital, police said at the time. She later was transferred to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Police said a passenger vehicle traveling in the opposite direction of the bus struck the student. The driver stopped and is cooperating with the investigation.

The bus's flashing lights were activated at the time of the crash, police said.

The crash remains under investigation, Lutz said. The information will be reviewed with the York County District Attorney's Office.

School district: 'Remember Arianna and keep her and her family in your thoughts'

The district issued the following statement to the community:

"To our Northeastern Family,

I am deeply saddened to share the news with our district community that Arianna Landis, an 11th grade student at Northeastern High School, passed away yesterday afternoon as a result of an accident that occurred on October 26th. Arianna was a much loved Bobcat and a dear friend to many. She will be deeply missed.

News of Arianna’s passing was shared with our district staff and our high school students and families last evening. Counselors and additional support services were available today at the high school for students and staff in need. As we grieve Arianna’s passing and surround her family with the love and support of our community, it is important that we also take care of ourselves and each other at this difficult time. We will continue to offer additional support services to our students, families, and staff as long as it is needed. If your child is in need of support and attends another building, please contact their school counselor so services can be arranged.

It is so difficult to lose a beloved member of our Bobcat Family. Please remember Arianna and keep her and her family in your thoughts. I know that our Northeastern community will continue to surround Arianna’s family and friends with love through this difficult time."
