Northern Lebanon school board looking to fill recently vacated board seat

The Northern Lebanon School Board accepted the resignation of Kate Kimble-Tuszynski during the Oct. 11 board meeting and is currently seeking candidates to fill the position.

Board members did not discuss the reason’s for Kimble-Tuszynski’s resignation, however the agenda noted that she will be moving away from the district.

Attempts to reach Kimble-Tuszynski were unsuccessful.

The board has only 30 days to fill the position and is currently accepting applications.

"There aren't people jumping out of the woodwork right now that I now of," said Superintendent Gary Messinger, "but maybe there will be."

Board members joked during the meeting that candidates might also have to fill the role of legislative liaison, a position that Kimble-Tuszynski held and one that none of the other members volunteered to take.

Eligible candidates are required to be a U.S. citizen living in Pennsylvania and a resident of the school district for at least one year prior to the date of the appointment. Board members cannot be already employed by the district during their time in office. They also must be at least 18 years old and have no record of conviction for a felony offense or misdemeanor involving dishonesty or "moral turpitude."

Active-duty military, including reservists, are prohibited from running or holding a partisan political office.

The position is designated as incompatible with most other local elected offices. The appointment would last until the next board election in 2024.

Those interested in the position should notify board secretary Pat Martin at pmartin@norleb.k12.pa.us or (717) 865-2117 ext. 2501 before Oct. 24.

The board members will create and submit questions for the candidates to board President Barry Naum, who will then finalize a list of questions for candidates.

Requesting written responses from candidates is different than what the district has done for appointments in the past, but Messinger said in a follow-up email that the board intends to use written responses to help narrow down potential prospects in case there is a large number of applicants.

Written responses will be due on Nov. 1.

Answers will be reviewed by the board in early November, and invitations will then be sent to candidates for the Nov. 7 board meeting, where final selection will take place.

Additional questions will be asked of the candidates on the night of the selection.
