Northern lights flash, flicker across Michigan skies overnight: See the photos
While you likely were sleeping, some Michiganders were stargazing — and photographing what they saw.
The northern lights, or more romantically known as the aurora borealis, were visible from various spots throughout the state late Monday and early Tuesday, from the Upper Peninsula to the Traverse City area to Port Austin. When this natural phenomenon occurs, it lights up the sky. Some, apparently, said on social media they traveled far to witness it.
Cultures from around the world told stories to explain it.
In Michigan, the Algonquin would say, according to various accounts, that the creator lit a huge fire to let his people know that even though he was far away, he was still thinking of them. The aurora was a reflection of that flame.
