Northern State University appoints new dean, interim dean

Northern State University has appointed one new dean and one interim dean, the university announced recently in a news release.

Doug Ohmer has been appointed dean of the School of Business, while Anna Schwan has been appointed interim dean of the Millicent Atkins School of Education.

Ohmer has worked at Northern since 1994. He has had numerous positions within the School of Business, including department chairman, department coordinator and founding director of the Center of Excellence in International Business.

He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and banking from Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Kent.; a master's from Northern Kentucky University; and a doctorate in business administration/management from the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

Schwan is an assistant professor of teacher education and department chairwoman. She has worked at Northern since 2017. She earned bachelor’s degrees in English and Spanish from South Dakota State University, a master's in teaching English learners from Valley City State University in North Dakota and a doctorate in school administration from the University of South Dakota.

Schwan’s term will be a two-year appointment as a national search for a permanent education dean is conducted, according to the release.

After having a combined dean for a couple of years, each of the schools will once again be led by a distinct academic dean. The change is part of an effort to expand deans’ roles in Northern strategic priorities such as enrollment and fundraising.
