Northern wing of Changi Airport Terminal 2 reopens after expansion works
More immigration lanes and kiosks, automated lanes and baggage handling in operation, will terminal opening fully in October
SINGAPORE — The northern wing of Changi Airport Terminal 2 (T2) returned to operations on Thursday (28 September) after three and a half years of engineering and expansion works.
The revamped terminal has added 15,500 square metres of space to support additional infrastructure, new systems and more retail offerings.
While several shops and dining outlets, as well as facilities and amenities, are now open, the full suite of T2 attractions, stores and restaurants will be launched progressively until end-October. Changi Airport Group (CAG) said in a media release that it will celebrate T2's full reopening with an event in early November.
More immigration lanes, kiosks and a fully-automated baggage handling system
The upgraded T2 hosts a new central common-use Fast and Seamless Travel (FAST) zone in its departure hall, which will house more automated check-in kiosks and bag drop machines. Additional automated immigration lanes have also been added.
Automated special assistance lanes are also available at both arrival and departure halls for the first time. The terminal’s baggage handling system is also fully-automated with enhanced security features, allowing some 2,400 bags to be stored at any time.
Additionally, two baggage belts in the baggage claim hall have also been lengthened to accommodate a higher volume of bags. The terminal now houses a new chiller plant, which will consume 30 per cent less energy to cool the building.
The revamped terminal interior seeks to create a serene and relaxing atmosphere for passengers and visitors. Natural materials have been merged in the terminal's wall cladding and flooring, with lush green columns showcasing an array of plants.
Operational flights from T2
Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines (flights to Southeast Asia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka), and Swiss will begin their airline operations from the northern wing of T2 from Thursday.
Next month will see Air Japan, all Nippon Airways, Etihad, Indigo and Singapore Airlines’ flights to Maldives and Nepal commencing operations at T2, bringing the total number of operational airlines at T2 to 16.
Singapore Airlines’ First Class Check-In Reception and the SATS Premier Check-In Lounge are also open in the terminal. The Ambassador Transit Hotel and Lounge, as well as the Connect at Changi lounge, are also available in transit.
A new dining space in the transit area, Gourmet Garden, allows guests to view the planes via its floor-to-ceiling windows.
Guests looking to do some retail shopping can visit luxury Italian jeweller Pomellato, and Old Seng Choong, a heritage brand specialising in local bakes.
Eight in 10 shops at T2 are in operation, with more scheduled to open in coming weeks.
Passengers in transit can enjoy a new TV lounge with a large LED TV screen, comfortable plush seating, multiple charging points and wireless charging pods.
A bear-themed playground, 2 Bears Hideout, is also open for children to play.
T2's southern wing was reopened in May and October last year, for airplane arrivals and departures respectively.
