NON-CONFERENCE

Ellsworth 77, Buckley 74

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth boys’ basketball team picked up a hard fought win away from conference play Wednesday, topping Buckley in a 77-74 final.

Ellsworth owned a 21-14 lead after the opening quarter, picking up three triples from Patrick Puroll right out of the gates, then led in a 39-36 game at the half, again leaning on Puroll’s production from beyond the arc.

The Lancers then had to play out of a 62-55 hole after three, before a 23-point fourth lifted them to a victory, with Kelan Pletcher going 5 of 7 at the free throw line in the fourth.

“Great team win tonight,” said Ellsworth coach James Willingham. “Patrick Puroll came up with some big shots to help us in the first half. Jake (Jenuwine) and Kelan came alive more in the second half to get us moving. Carter Williams for Buckley was big tonight and it took everything we had to try to stop him.”

Jenuwine and Pletcher each finished with 24 points to lead the way, while Puroll finished with 21 points, all in the first half.

For Buckley, Landon Kulawiak scored 30, hitting five 3-pointers in the second half, then Williams added 28 points.

Ellsworth (7-3) will next welcome Grand Traverse Academy on Friday, Jan. 20.
