Northwest boys basketball coach Aaron Wallus resigned from his position Wednesday to "pursue an opportunity with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes," according to Vikings athletics director Jason Greene.

Wallus has guided the Vikings for the past four seasons. Northwest finished 4-20 this season. Wallus' teams never won more than 10 in a season. He finished his tenure with a 27-67 record.

Wallus informed his team Tuesday that he would step down to work with FCA. He's the second area coach to resign after the end of the season. Rossview girls coach Justin Woods left after guiding the Lady Hawks to the Class 4A state tournament.

"I am thankful for the opportunity to have been the coach at Northwest," Wallus said in school release. " It has been a great experience, and I hope the program continues to grow in the right direction under its future leadership. I am fully invested in continuing to support the Viking athletic community in the quest toward excellence."

Wallus spent two seasons as Northwest's girls coach and was previously an assistant at Kenwood for three years under former coaches John Stigall and Dennis Pardue.

“We are grateful for the work coach Wallus has done with our basketball program and for the impact he has made on our students and community," Greene said.

After winning 10 games during the 2018-19 season, the Vikings struggled to stay afloat despite having one of the best players in Montgomery County in Ametri Moss. Moss would go on to win the Leaf-Chronicle All Area boys basketball player of the year in 2021.

Wallus made the move from girls basketball to boys when he was hired in 2018. The Vikings finished that season 5-20 - a year after capturing the program's first district tournament title in 22 years.

COVID-19 cancelations wreaked havoc on the 2020-21 season when Northwest finished 4-12. The Vikings have not had a winning season since 2016-17 when they finished 20-7.
