Northwest Minnesota Arts Council announces annual art exhibit winners

Sep. 23—The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council has announced winners of its annual art exhibit held recently in Warroad.

The awards were presented to student and adult artists in the council's seven-county service region who participated in the exhibit. The region consists of Kittson, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Roseau and Red Lake counties.

The arts council presented a total of $2,300 to the exhibit award-winners at the Northwest Minnesota Artist Reception at the Discovery Development Hub in Warroad.

"I was completely blown away by some of the works that obviously came from and spoke to our shared struggles against the COVID pandemic this last year," said Holly Alcott, a qualified juror and Region 2 Arts Council grants manager, in a news release.

Alcott, of Shevlin, Minn., said the art submitted for the annual exhibit represented "an amazing amount of talent in one room, both by adults and students."

The exhibit award-winners in the adult artist category are: first place — Debbie Aune of Gatzke, oil painting, "Daddy and Son"; second place — Heather Sabian, Crookston, sculpture, "Skin Hunger"; third place — Dennis Kinkead, Hallock, sculpture, "Alarmed Dragon"; and a People's Choice award was presented to Irene Bertils of Crookston.

Merit awards were presented to Nick Reitzel, Karlstad; Richard Jensen, Crookston; Summit Kuehn, Roseau; Nancy Vra, Red Lake Falls, and Glen Heppner, Warroad.

The exhibit award-winners in the student artist category are: first place — Kansas Jensen, Goodridge, acrylic painting, "Covid Gothic"; second place — Aubree Bonham, Fertile, mixed media, "No Evil"; third place — Alexis Jalbert, Ada, sculpture, "Sushi"; and a People's Choice awards were presented to Kansas Jensen and Aubree Bonham.

Merit awards were presented to Brennon Collins, Greenbush; Eskyla Manriquez, Ada; Macrina Herbel, Fertile; Donavin Hagen, Goodridge; and Riley Saurdiff, Grygla.
