Northwestern FFA participates in Wayne County fair

The Northwestern FFA had a large number of animal exhibits for the 2023 Wayne County fair. Many of our students took market hogs, beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, poultry, rabbits, goats, and horses.

The students who exhibited market hogs were Brooke Hershey, Kate Johnson, Addy Connelly, Madilyn Smith, Lily Boreman, Makenna Connelly, Emma Connelly, and Jaycee Reed. Makenna Connelly placed first in the 15 year old swine showmanship class.

Madilyn Smith placed first in the 13 year olds intermediate Showmanship class. Kate Johnson placed first with her market hog in the showmanship class. Emma Connelly placed first in hog showmanship. Congratulations to all of the hog exhibitors.

Goat and cattle exhibitors

Some of our students also took goats. The following students showed goats: Kaleb Badger, Ella Saal, Daniel Shakan, Addy Connelly, and Makenna Connelly. Congratulations to Kaleb Badger for earning Reserve Champion in the market class with his market goat. Congratulations to Addy Connelly for placing first in the Pygmy Goat showmanship class. Makenna Connelly received an Honorable Mention for her meat market goat and first place in the Intermediate Division Pygmy obstacle course. Jaycee Reed was placed first in Division 4 class 2 reserve division winner. Congratulations to the students who exhibited goats this year.

Northwestern FFA also had a group of students take dairy and beef cattle. Jacoby Gilbert, Lily Boreman, Brooke Hershey, Grady Ellerbrock, Jake Howman, and Jaycee Reed competed with their dairy heifers. Lily Boreman placed first with her dairy heifer in the Jersey winter yearling class. Haley Caldwell earned Champion Dairy Market Steer. Jaycee Reed placed first in the Junior yearling dairy heifer. Jake Howman earned Reserve Champion with his dairy cow in the Senior 2 Brown Swiss class and first place in the Winter yearling Brown Swiss. Brooke Hershey placed first with her Senior three year old dairy cow.

The students who exhibited beef steers were Haley Caldwell, Jaycee Reed, and Ella Saal. Haley Caldwell competed with her Beef steer and earned Reserve Champion Beef Carcass. Ella Saal placed eighth place with her beef steer in the breed class. Jaycee Reed placed first with her beef steer in the market class, (first intermediate calf with her beef steer,) and first place in showmanship. Congratulations to all of the Dairy and Beef cattle exhibitors.

Sheep were shown at the fair as well. Although we had a smaller group of students exhibit sheep, they still showed their animals and placed well. The students who exhibited sheep were Kade Tegtmeier, Taryn Stoller, Kate Johnson, Brooke Hershey, Kaleb Badger, and Bryce Nussbaum. Congratulations to both Kade Tegtmeier and Kaleb Badger. Kade Tegtmeier earned Reserve Champion with his market sheep and first place class winner slick shorn ewe, and Kaleb Badger earned Reserve Champion Breeding sheep. Bryce Nussbaum participated in the carcass market sheep class. Taryn Stoller participated in the Showmanship Market Lamb class. Brooke Hershey earned Reserve Champion with her Natural colored ewe and Grand Champion with her natural colored yearling ewe. Congratulations to the students who participated with their sheep at the fair this year.

We had several students exhibit poultry this year. The students who exhibited poultry at the Wayne County Fair were Evan Cuthrell, Elaina Donnelly, Kate Johnson, Evan McKay, and Cara McKay. Congratulations to these students for exhibiting their poultry. Evan McKay and Cara McKay both participated in the layers class. Kate Johnson participated in the market class with her chicken. Evan Cuthrell participated in the market show class with his meat chicken.

Members also exhibited Rabbits at the fair. Olivia Scarbrough was our only exhibitor and placed 4th in intermediate showmanship 14-15 / Netherland Dwarf senior doe.

Our last category of animals Northwestern FFA had exhibited was horses. Our chapter had two members compete with their horses. They are Evan Cuthrell and Olivia Scarbrough. Congratulations to Evan Cuthrell for placing first in the barrel contesting class. Congratulations to Olivia for participating in western dressage and ranch riding with her horse.
