Northwestern girls continue dominance, Columbus edges Bulls’ boys at GMAC track finals

The GMAC track and field championships once again offered the chance to see multiple teams and athletes from Miami-Dade County battle for supremacy a month before they vie for those coveted state championships.

One of the more competitive rivalries continues to be that between Columbus and Northwestern on the boys’ side.

The two squads went down to the wire again on Saturday at Traz Powell Stadium before the Explorers emerged with another county title with 168 points. The Bulls finished with 127 points to clinch the runner-up spot.

Northwestern’s girls’ continued to dominate, however, winning their fourth GMAC title in a row and 11th in the past 12 county meets with 231 points, which put them a comfortable distance ahead of runner-up Goleman’s 55 points.

The Bulls’ girls swept all three relays, starting with the 3,200-meter relay they won with a time of 9:48.22.

Junior Shakynah Tresvant led Northwestern with wins in the triple jump 11.50 meters and the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.79.

Sophomore sprinter Kimora Kinsey won the 100 meters with a time of 12.40 seconds and was part of the winning 400-meter and 1,600-meter relays. Northwestern had another champion in the field events when freshman Nyla Christian won the high jump with a mark of 5.97 meters.
