Northwoods League: Stingers stun Bucks, 20-1

Jul. 9—WATERLOO, Iowa. — On a day when the Willmar Stingers learned they had five players named to the All-Star team, the rest of the squad played like All-Stars Friday night.

Willmar beat Waterloo 20-1 before 788 fans at Riverfront Stadium.

It was the most runs scored by the Stingers this season and included a 14-run sixth inning.

Willmar had 18 hits. Seven players had at least two hits, led by JT Navyac, who went 3-for-6 with three runs.

Drey Dirksen, the Willmar star who plays at Augustana University, went 2-for-4 with a double, three walks, two runs and an RBI.

Dirksen, a catcher, was named to the Northwoods League's Great Plains Division All-Star squad. Also on the team are: Joey Walls, an outfielder from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas; Jack Habeck, a pitcher from St. Cloud State; Sam Malec, a pitcher from the University of Minnesota; and John Klein, a pitcher from Iowa Central Community College.

Habeck, a left-hander from Appleton, Wisconsin, got the win Friday. He went five innings, allowing six hits and no earned runs, striking out two and walking one.

The All-Star game is 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. It features the Great Plains All-Stars vs. the Great Lakes Division All-Stars.

The Great Plains All-Stars will be managed by St. Cloud's Brian Lewis and his coaching staff. The Rox have six players selected. The Great Lakes team will be managed by Wisconsin Rapids' Kirk Shrider and his staff.

Willmar and Waterloo conclude their two-game series at 6:35 p.m. Saturday at Riverfront Stadium. Willmar then plays Sunday at Mankato.
