Northwoods League: Willmar five All-Stars help Great Plains to win

Jul. 20—WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. — The Willmar Stingers' five All-Stars helped the Great Plains Division win the Northwoods League All-Star Game 4-2 against the Great Lakes Division Tuesday at Witter Field.

Joey Walls, who won the Northwoods League Home Run Challenge on Monday, got the start in right field. The California State-Long Beach junior was 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored.

Drey Dirksen, a Willmar High School alum and Augustana University sophomore, started the game at catcher. He finished 0-for-2.

The Stingers also had three pitchers throw scoreless innings. Josh Habeck was credited with the win after tossing the second inning. Sam Malec pitched the third and John Klein the fourth.

Habeck, a sophomore from St. Cloud State, and Malec, a freshman from Minnesota, both had one strikeout. Klein, a freshman from Minnesota State-Mankato, walked one batter but got out of the inning unscathed.

Charlie Condon of the St. Cloud Rox was 3-for-3 with a pair of solo home runs in the second and sixth innings.

For the Great Lakes, Jacob Igawa of the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters was 1-for-2 with a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh.

Leading the Great Plains West with an 8-2 record in the second half of the season, the Stingers resume play against the Rochester Honkers at 6:35 p.m. Thursday at Mayo Field in Rochester.
