Norwalk drops SBC Lake game at Vermilion

Apr. 14—VERMILION — The Norwalk baseball team plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, but that was it on Friday in a 9-2 loss to host Vermilion in an SBC Lake Division matchup.

The Sailors scored eight times over the first three innings to take control of the game.

For Vermilion (3-5, 2-3), Riley Kearns allowed a pair of unearned runs in the first inning — then put up six scoreless innings. He allowed four hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk.

For Norwalk (3-7, 2-4), Ben Rothhaar singled and had the lone RBI. Cooper Smith doubled and scored one of the two runs for the Truckers.

Nick Lukac and Isaiah Wells had the other two base hits for Norwalk, which got four innings of one-run work from Zack Dumbeck. He struck out five.

The Truckers host Bellevue on Monday in another league game. The Truckers won the first meeting, 2-1, on March 30 in Bellevue.

Edison 12, Ashland 1

MILAN TWP. — The Chargers won their fifth straight game thanks to a seven-run second inning in a non-league win over the Arrows.

Edison (8-3) got four innings from Bryson Wittmer, who allowed one earned run on two hits with five strikeouts and five walks.

Hayden Fry was 3-for-4 and scored three times for Edison, while Clint Finnen and Wittmer each had two hits and drove in two runs.

Aiden Drake also doubled and drove in two runs for the Chargers.

COLLINS — The Roughriders improved to 4-5 overall with Saturday's non-league win in eight innings over the Raiders.

After allowing five runs to the Raiders in the top of the seventh, the 'Riders plated two runs in the bottom half to force extra innings.

Grant Bethard led off the eighth with a single, then reached second on a balk. He then scored on a passed ball to end the game.

Austin Harmeling went the first 6 1/3 innings for Western. He allowed two unearned runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks. Logan Wiegel was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while Chris Buchanan homered and drove in two.

LAGRANGE — The Trojans allowed a six-run fifth inning to the host Wildcats in a non-league loss.

For South Central (2-4), Alex Hamons singled and drove in the lone run in the seventh inning. Eric Sanders and Gunner Ray had the other two hits.
