Norwalk girls soccer opens with shutout win

Aug. 23—NORWALK — The Norwalk girls soccer team opened its season with two quick first-half goals and made it stand in a 3-0 victory over visiting Shelby in a non-league match at Contractors Stadium.

Hannah Steffanni opened the scoring in quick fashion with a goal just three minutes in. She was quickly followed by a goal from Abby Koenig less than a minute later.

Leading 2-0, Koenig then added a second goal early in the second half.

Alina Bigler led the way on defense and Lilly Farmer made seven saves at goalkeeper for Norwalk, which visits Port Clinton on Thursday in another non-league matchup.

Edison 2, Crestview 1

MILAN — The Chargers scored twice times in the final 30 minutes to open the season with a non-league win over the visiting Cougars on Monday.

Trailing 1-0 with under 35 minutes left, Haley Chaput opened the scoring for Edison off an assist from Alaina Keegan to tie the score with 30 minutes remaining. The go-ahead goal then came from Abigail Hearing off an assist by Amelia Chartrant found the net with 2:30 left.

At goalkeeper, Edison's Brianna Marcy made nine saves.

Edison 3, Perkins 2

MILAN — The Chargers picked up a non-league win over the visiting Pirates on Monday at Edison Park.

Alli Vogus won at first singles over Greta Gross for Edison, 6-1, 6-0. At third singles, Lizzie Campbell posted a win over Leanne Sumner (6-4, 7-5). The Chargers then won at second doubles as Sara Gates and Keira Keoghan beat Jeni Emery and Jasmine King (0-6, 6-1, 6-3).

Also for Edison, Brynleigh Dail fell to Ashi Kota in three sets, (6-1, 4-6, 7-5). The first doubles team of Ivy Kluding and Delaney Lococo fell to Katelyn and Noelle Showalter (6-1, 6-1).

VOLLEYBALL

Northwestern 3, New London 0

NEW LONDON — The Wildcats dropped Monday's season opener to the Huskies in non-league play, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-17.

Sasha Bowns had eight kills and Pailee Wilson had seven for the 'Cats, who also got nine and six points each from Gracie Thomas and Madison Rowland.

Also for New London, Bowens had 14 digs and Thomas had 15 assists and 13 digs.
