Norwalk opens season with win

Mar. 24—NORWALK — The Norwalk boys tennis team opened with a 4-1 non-league win over the visiting Shelby Whippets on Friday at the Middle School courts.

Winning for Norwalk included Ashton Coe (6-4, 6-0) at second singles over Bryson Baker. Drew Thomas beat Jared Billheimer (6-4, 6-4) at third singles.

At first doubles, Joshua Newhouse and Ethan Brown beat Ty Keinath and Michael Vogt (6-4, 6-0), while the No. 2 team of Spencer Colahan and Eli Kluding defeated Carter Nett and Dawson Gove (6-4, 6-4).

Norwalk's lone loss came at first singles, as Bryan Sommers fell to Jacob Williams, 6-0, 6-2.

"It was nice to get started today with our first match," said Norwalk coach Ray Scheid, who is back at the helm this season after he led the program for seven years from 2004-10. "The guys started out a bit slow, but took control of things in their second sets.

Scheid said it was nice to see the addition of Coe back after he took last season off.

"It makes quite a difference in our lineup to have his talent and experience," he said. "I thought Drew had a nice match for us at third singles, as he was very patient and waiting for his opportunities to win points."
