Norwalk throws no-hitter; falls at Crestview

Mar. 28—OLIVESBURG — There were just two hits — but 11 walks total — in Tuesday's non-league game between the Norwalk and Crestview baseball teams.

However, it was the Truckers on the wrong end of the 2-1 loss despite not giving up a hit in six innings in Olivesburg.

In the first inning, the Cougars led off with a walk, then advanced to third on a stolen base and a passed ball. A second passed ball allowed the runner to score.

Nick Lukac walked and advanced to third on a pair of steals, then scored on a passed ball in the top of the fifth for the Truckers (0-2).

However, the Cougars answered in the bottom half of the frame with two walks, a sacrifice bunt, followed by an error that allowed the winning run to score.

Lukac, Ben Rothhaar and Grady Naseman singled for the Truckers. Wesley Shupe pitched four scoreless innings and struck out three, but was hurt by eight walks for the two unearned runs. Naseman pitched the last two hitless innings with one walk.

Norwalk is scheduled to begin SBC Lake Division play on Wednesday at Bellevue.

NORWALK — The Panthers scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to slip past the Flyers in a non-league game Tuesday.

Drew Kuhnle was 2 for 4 with a double and started the first four scoreless innings for the Flyers. He didn't allow a hit and struck out six with three walks.

Ashton Stang was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Kole Maxwell singled and drove in the other St. Paul run. Ben Burger, Thomas Zuccaro and Landon Fries added singles.

"Defense and pitching were solid tonight," St. Paul head coach Aaron Fries said. "The game came down to the fact that we left eight guys on base. We had a chance to break it open in the first inning.

"From there, it was just a real struggle to string together hits," he added. "St. Mary deserves a lot of credit. They played a good game."

The Flyers are scheduled to host Tiffin Calvert on Thursday in another non-league game and a rematch of last year's Division IV district championship game. The teams have met in the district tournament in consecutive years.
