Norwegian Air's loss balloons
"Norwegian Air is facing challenging times ahead"
That was the blunt message on Friday (August 28), as the airline reported a deep loss of $610 million for the first half of the year.
The company also warned it needed more money to cope with the effects of the global health crisis.
As with most airlines, it has been a tough year for Norwegian, with fewer tourists travelling around.
In May, creditors took control of the carrier, aiming to keep it in business until demand for air travel came back.
That financial rescue allowed it to access a state-guaranteed loan,
But Norwegian warned Friday even that won't be enough to get through the crisis.
At present, the airline aims to rebuild operations on a smaller scale.
Most of its business remains on hold and the company canceled orders for 97 Boeing aircraft in late June.
One slight positive came when the company said it will put five more aircraft back in the air in September - raising the total to 25.
155 planes, however, will stay grounded.
