Norwegian Epic cruise ship to sail out of Port Canaveral in late shift from Europe

In this article:

Norwegian Cruise Line is deploying the Norwegian Epic to Port Canaveral for the 2023-24 winter season.

The ship will sail seven-day Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries out of Port Canaveral, starting on Dec. 17, and running through April 2024, the cruise line and the port said.

The Epic currently is sailing from Italy and Spain on Mediterranean cruises. Norwegian originally planned to continue sailing the Epic in Europe during the coming winter. But, instead, Norwegian will transfer the ship to Port Canaveral, saying the change is in response to the growing demand for Caribbean sailings.

Port Canaveral Chief Executive Officer John Murray said the Epic is "a terrific addition to our fleet of home-ported ships offering a variety of Caribbean sailings to meet the surging demand."

Port Canaveral has surpassed Miami as the world's busiest cruise port, based on passenger volume.

This is relatively late for a cruise line to announce such a change in home ports, as Norwegian already had been selling tickets for its winter cruises on the Epic out of Europe. It now is issuing refunds, plus credits for future cruises, to passengers whose European cruises were canceled.

Powerful economic engine: Port Canaveral has a $6 billion annual economic impact. Here's what it means

The Norwegian Epic ― which was built in 2010 and refurbished in 2020 ― can accommodate 4,100 passengers, based on double-occupancy of its cabins, and has 1,724 crew members. It has 19 decks, is 1,081 feet long and is 155,873 gross tons.

The Epic will join the Norwegian Escape at Port Canaveral for the 2023-24 winter season, when the port will be home to a record-tying 13 cruise ships. The Escape's winter deployment to Port Canaveral was previously announced, with seven-day Caribbean cruises scheduled from November 2023 through March 2024.

The Escape is slightly larger than the Epic, with a double-occupancy capacity of 4,266 and a crew of 1,733.

In addition, Norwegian previously committed to sail the Epic out of Port Canaveral during the winter of 2024-25.
