Norwich men linked to stabbing, shooting on Broadway get prison time

Two Norwich men received prison sentences today in connection with two unrelated incidents, including a stabbing and shooting, on Broadway in Norwich. Merzilas Braboy, 19, one of three men charged for their roles in a Sept. 29, 2008, shooting on Broadway, was sentenced in New London Superior Court to 16 months in prison and three years probation. Edwin A. Rivera , 20, was sentenced to two years in prison and three years probation in connection with a Sept. 11, 2008, stabbing on Broadway in Norwich.Rivera was arrested following an investigation into an afternoon fight involving as many as 10 people on Broadway. Arriving police found John Fleurimonde, 21, had been stabbed in the back. Rivera had pleaded no contest to the charge of second-degree assault. Rivera was also arrested in 2009 in connection with a shooting in the area of Elizabeth Street where witnesses reported seeing a car chase with several shots fired. Prosecutors did not pursue charges against Rivera in that case.Braboy was driving in a vehicle on Broadway on Sept. 29, 2008 when police said Corey Wynn, a passenger in the vehicle, fired several rounds at two women on the sidewalk. Police said it was part of an ongoing feud between the women and their boyfriends. No one was hit, but police said one of the bullets came within inches of an innocent bystander outside the Wauregan Laundromat.Braboy pleaded guilty under the Alford Doctrine to conspiracy to commit second-degree assault.Richard J. David, 22, was previously sentenced last to two years in prison in connection with the shooting. Wynn, 23, of New London, who had multiple pending cases, was previously sentenced to four years in prison.
