Sep. 19—MASSENA — Trains, toys and collectibles like coins and sports cards will greet visitors at the Massena Arena this weekend.

The Norwood Model Railroad Club is hosting its 14th annual St. Lawrence Valley Model Train, Toy and Collectible Expo from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

It's an opportunity to see club layouts from New York and Canada, and visit vendors who are buying, selling and appraising new and used model trains, toys, coins, sports cards and more. There's also a free modeling clinic, and free outside miniature train rides in the arena annex. Refreshments will be available to benefit the Massena Recreation Department.

Thomas D. Jarvis, the club's treasurer, organizer of the annual show and vendor, said the arena floor will be packed with exhibitors and vendors.

"The arena is going to be full inside. We've got a couple of layouts that have never been here before, so we're excited about that. We've got toy dealers, sports card dealers, a lot of train dealers, and we have layouts coming from all over the place," he said. "We try to do something a little bit different every year. That's why we have the coin dealers and the sports cards dealers, to kind of expand it from trains to attract more interest."

He said this is more like the 40th year the club has held its show, but the 14th since it began setting up at the Massena Arena.

"It's not annual thing because we've missed a few years. It's closer to our 40th. We did it at the high school at Norwood-Norfolk for years. Then we moved it to Potsdam State for years. Then we moved it back to the high school before we moved back to Massena," Jarvis said.

Club member James Shaw was at the arena on Tuesday to begin preparations for setup. Jarvis said among the train layouts are one from Plattsburgh that measures 20 feet wide by 38 feet long. Another from Massachusetts is 14 feet wide by 32 feet long. A family from Watertown is bringing a layout that measures 30 feet wide by 30 feet long. Also on display are layouts that are 14 feet wide by 20 feet long and 14 feet wide by 18 feet long, as well as other layouts of different dimensions.

Jarvis said many of the exhibitors are back again from previous shows.

"Club-wise, most of the time it's the same. This year we have two clubs that have never done it before," he sad.

Planning for the 2024 show will begin right after this weekend's show, he said.

"We will be doing a show in Syracuse on Nov. 4 and 5. We'll hand out flyers for our show," Jarvis said.

Admission for this weekend's show is $5, and children 10 and under are free.
