Not a great beach day: Wind and surf advisories issued for Cape Cod

Wednesday won't be a great beach day on Cape Cod. The National Weather Service has issued wind and surf advisories for Aug. 17.

The wind advisory for the Cape runs from midnight to 3 p.m. on Aug. 17. North winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected. According to the National Weather Service, tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages are possible. The wind could also blow around unsecured objects.

The high surf advisory is in effect from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 17. Large breaking waves of four to eight feet are expected in the surf zone, according to the National Weather Service. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are expected with the possibility of localized beach erosion.

For mariners, a gale warning is in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 17. Seas are expected to be five to seven feet in Cape Cod Bay, four to seven feet in Nantucket Sound and eight to 11 feet off the backshore of the Outer Cape.

On the plus side, the Cape could see some much-needed rain overnight and into Wednesday. Up to an inch of rain is possible by the time sunny skies return on Thursday.

Here is the National Weather Service forecast for Hyannis:

Wednesday: Showers, mainly before noon. Patchy fog before 7 a.m. High near 72. Breezy, with a north wind 18 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday night: A slight chance of showers before 10 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 63. Northwest wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 79. West wind 11 to 15 mph.

Thursday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 66. West wind 7 to 10 mph.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 84. Southwest wind 8 to 11 mph.

Friday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 67. West wind 5 to 8 mph.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Southwest wind 5 to 9 mph.
