Author Julie Hedgepeth Williams will present a lecture on the "Three Not-So-Ordinary Joes" on Aug. 15 at the Museum of Coastal Carolina.

The Sandbar lecture series presents "Three Not-So-Ordinary Joes" by author Julie Hedgepeth Williams, 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15 at the Museum of Coastal Carolina, 21 East Second St., Ocean Isle Beach. Williams is a professor, writer, and author of many popular history books. She lives in Birmingham, Alabama, and visits Ocean Isle Beach regularly.

"Three Not-So-Ordinary Joes" is the story of how three guys named Joe started Southern literature. Joseph Addison, a famous 18th century British journalist, inspired Joseph Addison Turner to produce the only newspaper ever published on a Southern plantation. Turner’s apprentice, Joel Chandler Harris, recorded slave folktales from stories he heard while working on Turner’s plantation newspaper. Narrating his stories through a fictional character named “Uncle Remus,” Harris’ books established Southern literature. The author will bring the book to "life" with animated historical anecdotes.
