Open Call, one of the most popular events of the cultural season, takes place in April and highlights the amazing talents of local desert artists ranging in age from 8 years old and up. It offers up a smorgasbord of entertainment from singers, dancers, musicians, puppeteers, actors and so much more.
“We’re excited about the promise of another Open Call at McCallum,” said Kajsa Thuresson-Frary, McCallum’s vice president of education and the event's long-time producer and artistic director. “Working with local talent is both a privilege and a joy, and in the face of the pandemic, so many of the values we underscore with this community project seem more important than ever. We hope to serve a diverse group of artists this year and serve up a dynamic and inspiring show in April.”
If you have an act that you would like to showcase, do not miss this chance to perform at McCallum Theatre and work with industry professionals. Join a cast of outstanding local performers in this fully produced talent project that has become a McCallum audience favorite. Compete for a $5,000 grand prize and additional top awards. All finalists receive cash stipends. The public performances take place April 14-16. Co-presenting sponsors are the H.N. & Frances C. Berger Foundation and Commander Allen Donor Advised Fund.
“Open Call was a thrill and the most amazing experience of my life,” said 2019 grand prize winner Saigo Iniguez. "I am grateful for the opportunity and the new friends that uplifted me on the journey. As an introvert, I learned that making friends and connecting with people is very important. The whole production was spot on. The credit doesn't go to the winner, but to everyone who competed and helped in the process.”
Open Call is open to local aspiring performing artists ages 8 and up who reside within a 45-mile radius of the theater. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required. Participants must commit to full rehearsal and performance schedules. The deadline to enter is Jan. 19. Visit bit.ly/mccallumopencall for details and to enter at no cost.
Tickets for Open Call go on sale in March. For more information, contact Joanna Fookes, education program manager at email@example.com or call (760) 776-6195.
