Notre Dame football names Tyler Buchner starting QB ahead of Ohio State opener

Ohio State football now has a better idea of what Notre Dame's offense will look like when it takes the field at Ohio Stadium Sept. 3.

The Fighting Irish announced Saturday that the offense will be led by quarterback Tyler Buchner in the season opener against the Buckeyes.

Last season as a freshman, Buchner played in 10 games for Notre Dame, completing 21 of his 35 passes for 298 passing yards, throwing three touchdowns and three interceptions. In the ground game, he added three more scores averaging 7.3 yards per carry.

Buchner beat out quarterback Drew Pyne for the first-team reps, who has completed 17 of his 33 pass attempts for 236 passing yards and two touchdowns through his first two years in the program.

Buchner takes the reins of the Notre Dame offense from Jack Coan, the former Wisconsin quarterback, who started for the Fighting Irish as a graduate transfer last fall.

Buchner came into the Notre Dame program as a four-star quarterback in the 2021 class and was the No. 71 player and No. 11 quarterback in the country.

Notre Dame loses WR Avery Davis for season

Around Buchner, Notre Dame is set to be short handed on offense.

The program announced Saturday that receiver Avery Davis will miss the season after tearing a ligament in his right knee.

Notre Dame will come into its season opener against Ohio State with only five scholarship receivers, including Lorenzo Styles Jr., the brother of Ohio State freshman safety Sonny Styles, who hails from Pickerington.

Ohio State is set to take on Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 to kick off the 2022 season.
