Notre Dame football will have a new look at quarterback heading into the 2022 season.

Former four-star quarterback Tyler Buchner was named Notre Dame's starting quarterback in the Fighting Irish's season opener against Ohio State Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.

Here's what we know about Buchner heading into Saturday's primetime matchup against the Buckeyes.

Tyler Buchner takes over Jack Coan, Notre Dame football's 2021 QB

Buchner was named the starter to lead the Fighting Irish offense, taking the reins of former Wisconsin transfer Jack Coan, who started for Notre Dame as a graduate transfer last fall.

Last season as a freshman, Buchner played in 10 games for Notre Dame, completing 21 of his 35 passes for 298 passing yards, throwing three touchdowns and three interceptions. In the ground game, he added three more scores averaging 7.3 yards per carry.

Buchner beat out quarterback Drew Pyne for the first-team reps, who has completed 17 of his 33 pass attempts for 236 passing yards and two touchdowns through his first two years in the program.

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman impressed with what Tyler Buchner has done in practice

In his Monday press conference, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said Buchner continued to stay consistent on the practice field even after being named the starting quarterback.

"That's what we're looking for out of him, that consistency, and I think there's a little bit of that confidence in the offense in terms of knowing who's the starting quarterback," Freeman said. "That's why we named the starting quarterback when we felt like it was right. The earlier we can name it, the earlier you can build that confidence and that consistency amongst that offensive unit."

Freeman said Buchner has done a "really good job" over the course of preseason practices of making good decisions, taking care of the football and making plays, seeing a tremendous amount of growth.

"It's been good to see his growth," Freeman said. "He's just continuing. I look from last year to spring ball to now and again, his growth as a quarterback, as a leader, as a decision maker has been really good to see."
