Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville girls tripped up in Adidas soccer tourney

The Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville girls soccer team faced two opponents on the pitch Friday night — St. Viator of Arlington Heights, Illinois, and themselves.

As a result, St. Viator blanked the Nikes, 5-0, in the Adidas Tournament of Champions at the Burlington Area RecPlex.

The tournament is "big schools, big competition," ND-WB/D coach Todd Ackerman said. "It can be tough at times, but at the end of the day we should be in shape to compete with these teams. We just have to step up our game a little bit."

Emilie Doershing and Monica Correa scored two goals each for St. Viator. Gabriella Letto scored one. The Lions led 3-0 at halftime.

St. Viator improved to 6-2-3. The Nikes slipped to 6-4.

The tough competition "definitely helps out," Ackerman said. "You learn from these matches. Every year we come here and sometimes we compete better than other times. I was a little disappointed with our girls in this game. I thought they were a little intimidated and they shouldn't have been. They can play with this team. They can play with any team in this tournament. It's going to help us down the road if the girls are willing to learn from it."

St. Viator didn't cause the problem, Ackerman said.

"I don't know so much that is was them," he said. "We were just intimidated. We forced our own problems. We didn't trap well. We didn't pass well. Then we started to get down on ourselves, so we turned the ball over a lot. We're better than that. We've played better schools than that. We need to have a little more confidence."
