NoVA Slightly Behind Tidewater Area In New Coronavirus Cases

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 912 additional coronavirus cases and 11 new deaths on Saturday. Cumulative numbers in Virginia now stand at 105,750 cases of the coronavirus, 8,701 hospitalizations, and 2,381 deaths, according to the VDH.

The statewide 7-day average of positive coronavirus tests is 7.1 percent as of Aug. 11. There have been 1,332,938 PCR tests completed in Virginia as of Saturday, an increase of 16,901 from Friday.

As of Saturday, new cases of the coronavirus in Northern Virginia totaled 221, or 24 percent of the state total. This is the fifth straight day that the region has reported more than 200 new coronavirus cases, the first time that has happened since early June.

The Eastern region of Virginia reported 245 new cases, followed by the Central region with 178 cases, the Southwest region with 157 and the Northwest region with 111 cases.

Among all jurisdictions in the state, Fairfax County led the way with 66 new cases of the coronavirus reported Saturday, followed by 54 new cases in Chesterfield County and 51 new cases in Prince William County. Norfolk and Virginia Beach rounded out the top five, with 49 and 45 new cases, respectively.

Statewide, hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients numbered 1,271 Saturday. That includes 167 patients on ventilators compared to 150 Friday and 279 in the intensive care units compared to 268 Friday. A total of 13,694 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals to date, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.

Ventilator use remains stable at 21 percent among all Virginia hospital patients as of Saturday, and ICU occupancy stands at 79 percent. The 2019 average for ICU occupancy in Virginia was 67 percent.

On Saturday, two hospitals were reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment in the next 72 hours, down from three hospitals on Friday, and one hospital was reporting difficulty obtaining other medical supplies. Over the last eight days, at least one hospital in Virginia has reported difficulty acquiring PPE.

Meanwhile, the Colonial Downs horse track in New Kent County east of Richmond canceled the remainder of its racing schedule this year due to recent multiple cases of the coronavirus, the Associated Press reported Saturday. “This was a difficult decision, but the best one for Virginia’s racing community,” Colonial Downs said in a statement.

  • Alexandria: 3,082 cases, 283 hospitalizations, 61 deaths; increase of 32 cases and one hospitalization.

  • Arlington County: 3,196 cases, 437 hospitalizations, 135 deaths; increase of 20 cases.

  • Fairfax County: 16,882 cases, 1,967 hospitalizations, 533 deaths; increase of 66 cases, 11 hospitalizations and two deaths.

  • Fairfax City: 98 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of five cases.

  • Falls Church: 62 cases, nine hospitalizations, six deaths; removal of one case.

  • Loudoun County: 5,482 cases, 360 hospitalizations, 115 deaths; increase of 41 cases and two hospitalizations.

  • Manassas: 1,696 cases, 124 hospitalizations, 22 deaths; increase of seven cases.

  • Manassas Park: 530 cases, 50 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes.

  • Prince William County: 9,824 cases, 814 hospitalizations, 178 deaths; increase of 51 cases and one hospitalization.

  • Fredericksburg: 426 cases, 45 hospitalizations, four deaths; increase of two cases.

  • Spotsylvania County: 1,598 cases, 103 hospitalizations, 35 deaths; increase of 17 cases.

  • Stafford County: 1,480 cases, 124 hospitalizations, 10 deaths; increase of 20 cases.
