Late Novelist Tom Clancy’s Massive Maryland Estate Hits the Market for $6.2 Million

Tom Clancy’s body of literary work—which birthed famed CIA agent Jack Ryan and included such hit novels-turned-movies as The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger—was known to find its main characters in any number of adventurous scenarios. One look at the late author’s Baltimore estate, Peregrine Cliff, which recently hit the market, and we can perhaps see where he got some of his inspiration. Up for grabs at $6.2 million, the Baltimore property includes not only a 17,000-square-foot main home, built in 1989, but also 536 acres of land that extends along a mile of the Chesapeake Bay and is perfect for playing out any spy-thriller fantasies.

The main house itself is impressive, with six bedrooms, six full baths, and two half-baths, vaulted ceilings throughout, a three-level elevator, and an office with enough bookshelves to take a lifetime to fill. But it’s the vast amenities throughout that make the property the perfect adult playground. (But for little ones, there’s a kid’s playground too.) Once a kid’s summer camp, Clancy invested in some major upgrades by way of an indoor pool, basketball and tennis courts, large sports fields, several guest houses, a private beach, and, for those spies in training, an underground gun range. While the home is being sold “as is,” it’s reported that the estate, which sits on 11 lots, could be divided by a buyer.

Since his death in 2013, much of Clancy’s assets have been slowly sold off. In addition to a Baltimore penthouse at the Ritz-Carlton Residences, the author also had amassed a huge collection of memorabilia that includes items like a crocodile-skin coffee table, velvet dining chairs, an antique pool table, and a snakeskin-topped table. So any eccentric buyers of Peregrine Cliff now know where to go for decorating ideas.
