The gateway to Jacksonville International Airport is about to undergo upgrades and renovations.

The Jacksonville Aviation Authority plans to overhaul the canopy and support structure in the vehicle arrival area where passengers are dropped off at the airport at 2400 Yankee Clipper Drive. City building inspectors approved the permits for the roughly $4 million project this month.

“This project includes the removal of the existing canopy located on both the upper and lower terminal roadways at Jacksonville International Airport," a JAA background memo said. "The steel support system for the canopy will be repaired and repainted and a new canopy will be installed.”

Summertime travel is sizzling again: What does it mean at Jacksonville's airport?

The canopy is literally one of the first things people arriving at the airport see. Michael Stewart, vice president of external affairs for JAA, said it’s been about three decades since the canopy was first installed and the agency wants it replaced before it tears or breaks down in any other way.

Stewart said the support structure is starting to show some signs of rust as well and will be repaired.

Balfour Beatty Construction LLC will handle the work that's expected to be completed in 2023.

JEA additions on Southside

JEA is adding another four buildings to its new water reclamation project in the southern area of Duval County.

About $11.4 combined is being spent on adding the new buildings at 11458 Apex Trail, according to permits approved this month by the Jacksonville Building Inspection Division.

All four buildings are from 1,000 to 7,000 square feet and to be made of masonry. The Haskell Co. is the contractor.

They are part of a bigger water reclamation project that is in the process of being built near the eTown development. The Greenland Water Reclamation Facility will cost about $150 million in total to complete. Several stages of the project have already been constructed this year.

The Greenland Water Reclamation Facility will not only serve residents and businesses within the expanding eTown master-planned community but areas outside the complex as well. The facility itself is outside the actual eTown boundaries.

JEA broke ground on the project this year and it’s projected to be complete in November 2024.
