When somebody has a miscarriage, it's a unique type of grief. You're not grieving for a person you'd built memories with, or had a cherished history with; you're grieving for a person who could have been, and the role you would have assumed as their parent.

For that reason, it can sometimes be difficult for friends or family members to know how to acknowledge what's happened. But a new series of cards launched by the Miscarriage Association intends to change that, as it offers the chance for loved ones to recognise and honour pregnancy loss in a sensitive way.

With miscarriage occurring in one in four pregnancies, the cards are more necessary than many might think.

One woman, Natasha Necati, has had eight miscarriages - and discovered how tricky her friends found it to navigate each time.

"When I had my miscarriages, people meant to be kind, but I did have comments like, 'Sorry for your loss, but at least you know you can get pregnant', and 'Don’t worry, you’re still young,' whereas others just didn’t say anything at all," said Natasha.

"I would have loved to receive cards like these."

The new range of cards, which are available to buy on PostMark, offer an alternative way for people to express their sympathies.

One card reads: "There's no good card for this. I'm so sorry for your loss". Another says: "I wish this wasn’t happening to you. I don’t know what to say. But I promise I am here for you. It says it all."

As Ruth Bender Atik, the national director of the Miscarriage Association, pointed out: "Greetings card retailers stock a card for almost every important life event, except one.

"Losing a pregnancy is heart-breaking and can be very lonely. Close family and friends often don’t know what to say, say the wrong thing, or just say nothing at all. The new cards have been launched to fill that gap. They may even become a treasured memento, the acknowledgement of the briefest of lives."

The range of four cards retail at £3.50, and are available to buy here.
