The race for U.S. Senate in Florida is heating up with a new poll out of the University of North Florida showing Democrat Val Demings with a 48-44 lead over Republican incumbent Marco Rubio.

Action News Jax caught up with U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-Florida), who serves as Chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee Wednesday for his reaction to the poll.

In that position, Senator Scott is responsible for helping Republican senatorial candidates pull out a win in November.

We asked the senator what he planned to do to help Rubio come out on top.

Scott said he’s not worried about the poll and he’s confident Rubio will come out of the November general election victorious.

Scott listed seven states he intends to focus the most energy on in Republicans’ effort to win back the US Senate, but Florida wasn’t on the list.

“Marco Rubio is gonna win. He’s been a very hardworking Senator. He represents the state. I’ve had the opportunity to serve with him in DC for three and a half years. He shows up every day. He’s gonna have a big win because the people of Florida know that they need to have somebody like Marco continue to service. He cares about our veterans, cares about, you know he’s on the right committees. That’s good for our state and he’s gonna have a big win,” said Scott.

Rubio’s Democratic challenger Val Demings tweeted about the UNF poll on Tuesday.

“I’m grateful for the support I had before any of the polls showed that we can win this race. Together we will flip Florida blue,” said Demings.
