NSman who collapsed during HIIT session died of coronary artery disease: HPB, Mindef

SINGAPORE — The 25-year-old Operationally Ready National Serviceman (NSman) who collapsed during a Health Promotion Board (HPB)'s fitness programme died of coronary artery disease last Wednesday (2 March), according to the findings of an autopsy.

In a joint statement from HPB and the Ministry of Defence (Mindef), the agencies added that HPB's review of safety practices for its Quick High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) sessions is ongoing. The Quick HIIT sessions remain suspended till further notice.

"The Ministry of Defence, the Singapore Armed Forces and HPB continues to assist the family in their time of grief."

The session that the NSman attended was part of the NS FIT(1) programme, held at West Coast Park last Wednesday.

The NSman collapsed at 7.38pm at the start of the main exercise after completing his warm up. He was attended to on site by trainers from HPB's external vendor, who administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and also used an automated external defibrillator (AED).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the incident at 7.41pm and arrived at 7.55pm. The NSman was subsequently conveyed to National University Hospital, while SCDF paramedics continued resuscitative efforts.

The ambulance arrived at NUH at 8.23pm and he was pronounced dead at 9.21pm.
